Courses and levels
Courses offered, and the students I teach
Every course on the McKinney mathematics sequence through Precalculus Advanced, together with AP Statistics and AP Chemistry. Students range from first grade to the first year of college.
The mathematics sequence
Most schools schedule mathematics in the following order: Algebra 1, Geometry, Algebra 2, Precalculus, Calculus. I tutor each course through Precalculus Advanced. As I am presently enrolled in AP Calculus BC, I can also advise a Precalculus student on the specific habits that will matter in the following year.
Algebra 1
On-level and Advanced.
Linear equations and systems, factoring, and quadratics. Almost every later difficulty can be traced to material in this course, which makes it the most valuable year in the sequence to secure properly.
Geometry
On-level and Advanced.
Proof, congruence, similarity, right triangle trigonometry, and circles. The first course in which a student is required to justify an answer rather than produce one.
Algebra 2
On-level and Advanced.
Polynomial and rational functions, exponentials and logarithms, sequences and conic sections. Performance here determines how manageable Precalculus proves to be.
Precalculus
On-level and Advanced.
Trigonometry, identities, vectors, transformations of functions, and an introduction to limits. Taught throughout with attention to the demands of Calculus.
AP Statistics and statistics
I completed AP Statistics in tenth grade alongside Advanced Precalculus and scored a 5 on the examination.
Statistics rewards careful reading of the question and correct selection of procedure considerably more than it rewards computation. The majority of marks are lost in the setup of a problem and in the written justification, and that is where the greater part of our time is spent.
AP Chemistry
I received an A+ across the full year and a score of 5 on the examination.
Stoichiometry, gas laws, thermochemistry, equilibrium, acids and bases, kinetics and electrochemistry. Chemistry is generous to students who set a problem out properly and unforgiving to those attempting to memorize it, so instruction concentrates on the setup.
Students I work with
Elementary
From first grade upward. Number sense and fluency, and in many cases, the restoration of a child’s confidence in their own capability.
Middle and high school
The full sequence described above, at both levels, includes students working a year ahead of their cohort.
First-year university
Any course listed here, most commonly Precalculus or introductory statistics.
In person and online
Sessions take place in person across McKinney and the wider Dallas and Fort Worth area, or online using a shared whiteboard. The rate, the preparation, and the materials are identical in either case. A number of families alternate between the two according to the week.
